2018 Salary & Benefits Report for Life Plan Communities Now Available

The national average hourly rate for CNAs in Continuing Care Retirement Communities/Life Plan Communities (CCRCs) saw an increase of about 3.35%, according to the 2018-2019 CCRC salary and benefits report published by the Hospital & Healthcare Compensation Service (HCS) in cooperation with LeadingAge.

LeadingAge Speaks Out on Workforce Crisis

On July 7, the New York Times published an article, It's Almost Like a Ghost Town. Most Nursing Homes Overstated Staffing for Years. The article contrasted the way nursing homes staffing levels were reported on Nursing Home Compare before and after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) instituted the payroll-based journaling system. 

In a statement to the Times, Katie Sloan pointed out that LeadingAge for several years pushed for more accurate reporting on nursing home staffing. She noted that recruiting, training and retaining workers is a huge challenge for our members, which we have heard again and again at the LeadingAge Town Hall meetings being held all around the country. Operator sees 5% retention increase through multifaceted approach to workforce issues

Recruiting and retaining employees is a challenge across all of senior living and post-acute care. One operator based in Colorado, where a 2.8% unemployment rate makes competition for high-quality workers especially great, is taking a multifaceted approach to address workforce issues.

Denver-based not-for-profit Christian Living Communities has rolled out several programs that the operator says already have resulted in a 5% increase in retention in the first quarter of 2018 compared with the turnover rate in 2017. The company owns, operates and manages nine senior living communities in Colorado, has two more communities under construction in Colorado and Missouri, and also offers home care services.
